Let me tell you what me and my colleagues have done for the Installation Festival two years ago at the engineering college to wider your perspective. I was a member of the ACM student chapter.
There were around 90 attendees and free applications from Microsoft, Adobe and Sun were distributed to students. Mostly Microsoft apps.
We created a system to automated the process of registration, keygen and installation. Here's how it happened:1) A student goes to the registration computer to fill out the installation festival form.2) The information will be transferred to another computer and keys are generated to be printed.3) The student goes to the installation desk to install the application(s).4) With the printed keys, my colleagues install requested applications and OS to their PCs.5) Students have the option to get the printed keys and CDs to install all applications by themselves at home.

        opensource technologies

It's essential to show how to REMOVE
Linux in case the user doesn't feel comfortable
anymore with Linux. We have to show that the user
has the freedom to use whatever they want &
that using or ditching Linux is equally an easy
                      process.

No need to write multiple versions of a
manual; just put multiple sections in the same
manual and that'll make the manual more useful
                        for a broader audience.

                          Salaam all,

Anyone up for installfest[1] event after
                            College Finals ?

I think we need todo it from time to time
todo some awareness around Linux and
                            opensource in General.

I think we need the following task force to
                            organize a successful one:

1- volunteers to spread the word at CS/CE
                            colleges at all universities

                            2- volunteers to write a Mini-Manual for
volunteers who will do the installation (can
be a group of people to collaborate on
                            google doc)

2.1- we might need several versions like one
for desktop user, one for graphics
designers, one for programmers etc.. So we
can install softwares/tools to help them
replace their day2day activities on windows
                            or mac

2- volunteers who will follow this manual
for installing the required for the said
                            user(s)

3- support from KITS as place for conducting
the installation and spreading the words for
                            KITS members

Any other ideas that can help?

                            Time revising?

Good to have one or doesn't worth it?

                            Let's brainstorm :)

                            Best Regards.

                            Bashar
